Legend Behind Amarnath Yatra

According to ancient Vedic texts and Purans, Amarnath Yatra has a great significance. There is a popular story attached to this Yatra which can help you in acknowledging this yatra in a better way.

It is believed that this cave was chosen by Bhole Shankar in order to narrate the secrets related to immortality and also to narrate the creation of this universe to Maa Parvati. This is the cave where Lord Shiva decided to open the secrets of immortality. When he was on the way to Amarnath cave he repeatedly renounced the near and dear ones. He left the bull named nandi on which he used to ride at Pahalgam(Bali gaon). At the place called chandanwari, Moon was released by him. He also removed the snakes at the bank of lake Sheshnag. He also left Ganesha, his son at a Mahagunas Parvat which is also called Mahaganesh hill. Lord Shiva also left earth, water, air, fire and sky behind which are the five elements of this world.

After reaching the Amarnath Cave, he sat on the deerskin and attained Samadhi. Before revealing the secrets of immortality, he ensured that no any living thing could hear what he was going to speak. So, he commanded a Kalagni named Rudra which he has created himself to kill every human being in and around this cave. But, coincidentally, an egg which was laid beneath the deer skin was untouched as it was not clearly seen. Later on the pigeons came out of this egg and when they hear the Amar Katha, they became immortal. Even today many devotees are found to be reporting that they have seen the pigeons while undertaking the arduous journey to pay their obeisance before Shiva-the ice lingam.

It is said that years later there was a rishi named Bhrigu who came on this way in the course of his journey to the Himalayas has seen this holy cave. As soon as people came to know about this cave, this place became an abode of Lord Shiva and also a centre of pilgrimage. Over all these years, the devotees of Lord shiva maintained this faith till date and the proof is the increasing number of people who are continuously undertaking this holy pilgrimage come what may. We will hopefully be witness the same situation on this Amarnath Yatra 2012.
