Legend Of Lord Yama

As per the legend, there was a ruler named King Hima. His son was predicted to die after marriage. Soon after the boy got married and his wife heard of the prediction, she decided to save her husband’s life.

So after marriage, his wife did not allow him to sleep and therefore, laid out all her jewelry. Along with this, she made a big heap of all the diamonds, silver and gold that she had, at the doorstep. She also lighted up the whole room with lamps and all through the night she sang songs to make the prince awake.

When Lord Yama arrived in the form of snake to take away Prince’s life, he became blind by the shine of the heap of jewelry and gold. Hence, Yamaraj could not enter the chamber and the life of prince was saved by his wife’s intelligence. Since then, the day is celebrated as Dhanteras and people buy gold and silver jewelry on this day. Along with this, they sing songs and offer prayers to remove all the evil and bad times from their lives.

Legend Of Lord Dhanvantari

As per the legend, once demons and gods had a fight for Amrit (elixir of immortality). Hence, it was decided to churn the ocean and divide Amrit equally between demons and gods. So, a churning of the ocean of milk to obtain Amrit was carried out.

While the churning of ocean, Lord Dhanwantari came out with a pitcher of Amrit. God Dhanvantari is considered to be the physician among the various gods. It is also said that he is one of the forms of Lord Vishnu. Dhanvantri indicates that health is the biggest wealth in life. Hence, Dhanteras is also dedicated to the Lord Dhanvantari.


Dhanteras: Traditions & Customs

Every festival is based on some traditions and customs; hence, Dhanteras also have some old traditions associated that make it an important day. Dhanteras is the day when people worship Goddess Lakshmi. Devotees sing the religious songs dedicated to the Goddess of wealth and prosperity. Along with this, small lamps are also lit at the entrance of the doors. Some people make Rangolis too. At some places, to welcome Goddess Laxmi, people make small footprints. These footprints are made by the help of flour of rice and Kumkum (vermilion). These indicate as if Goddess Lakshmi has come in the home spreading her blessings, all over the place.

Markets could be seen enjoying the festival, even before it arrives. Dhanteras : Rituals Of The Day

On the festival of Dhanteras, three important deities of the day, who give prosperity and wealth, are worshiped. These deities are Goddess Lakshmi, Lord Ganesha, and Lord Kuber. Among which, Goddess Laxmi is the foremost to be worshiped.

It is said that on the occasion of Dhanteras, Lord Kuber (treasurer of wealth) comes on earth and Lord Ganesha vanishes all the obstacles that come in his way.
