Mythology Behind Ekadashi

While celebrating Ekadashi, it is good to know its significance and the legends associated with this festival. Ekadasi is very auspicious time, indeed. Do not leave the chance of utilizing it to its best and seek the blessings of the almighty.

In ancient times, during the Satyug, Murdhanav- a demon son of Nadijung acquired a boon from Lord Brahma after severe penance. The Devas could not defeat him due to the boon. He misused his powers and defeated the Devas. He replaced the Devas with demons. Defeated Devas reached to Brahma ji to seek help. However, Brahma ji was also not capable of helping them. He took them to Kshir-sagar (the ocean of milk). All Devas reached that place and did severe penance to seek the blessings of supreme power.

Lord was pleased and granted Devas a boon. The Devas then went to Chandravati, land of demons, to challenge the demons. The war lasted for about 1000 years. Lord of the Devas became exhausted while fighting and hid himself inside a cave. The demon followed him. Lord sensed it and sat in meditation and light emitted from all his eleven senses produced a goddess. Demon was mesmerized with her beauty and proposed her for marriage. The goddess said that whoever will defeat her in fight, she will marry that person. Demon and goddess engaged into the fight, but demon could not defeat her. Devas were happy by this. Lord then gained consciousness and became happy by knowing everything.

The goddess then said that she is born from eleven senses and therefore, she is the Ekadashi. She was born when the lord was in taph therefore, she is Tapaswini. She added that she has fought the demons and defeated them and therefore, she is the demolisher of all the evil powers.

Lord was delighted by her words and asked her to seek a boon. She asked for her wish and the almighty accepted her as his better half. He said that she will be her better half in all yugas. The day of Ekadashi the day of supreme power and people utilize this day to demolish all the evils from their life.
