Karnavedha Sanskar

As per the Sanatan Sanskriti, when a baby is born in a Hindu family, his/her ear is pierced a few days after birth. The Vedic Shastras mention this tradition of ear piercing in its system and names it the Karnavedha Sanskar. This is the ninth sanskar of the 16, and the name comes from two Sanskrit words. Karna means ears while Vedha means to pierce; hence, Karnavedha implies piercing of one’s ears. Beliefs say that a person cannot do the Shradha Kriya without the Karnavedha Sanskar. Additionally, this sanskar also helps increase their hearing power, allows them to wear ear ornaments, and is also beneficial for their health benefits. This Sanskar is especially crucial for girls.

Karnavedha Sanskar occurs before the Upanayana Sanskar. Shastras suggests that when the Sun’s rays go through the ear piercings of the little child, then that fills them with splendour and makes them affluent. As the caste system is prominent in Hinduism, hence the different castes have separate methodologies of the sanskar. Where the children born as Brahman or Vaishya get their ear pierced with a silver needle, for the Kshudra it is iron, and for Kshatriya gold. In addition to this, all children of the Brahman, Kshatriya, and Vaishya caste can have this ritual with a porcupine’s thorn. Most importantly, the sanskar should occur in a Shubh Muhurat For Karnavedha 2020. This is why we have included the list of Karnavedha Muhurat 2020 Auspicious Timings above with all the necessary details for you to conduct a successful sanskar for your child.

As a result, people often commemorate the Karnavedha Sanskar in different ways, and many do not even take an auspicious muhurat into account. However, Shastras distinctly indicate that one should always begin a crucial task in a Shubh Muhurat, because only then will they be successful. As Karnavedha is a significant sanskar of Hinduism, hence calculating the Karnavedha Muhurat 2020 with the help of the Panchang is essential.

Calculation Of The Karnavedha Muhurat 2020 According To The Panchang

As discussed above, the Karnavedha Muhurat calculation occurs in accordance with the Hindu Panchang. Additionally, astrologers also take into account the kundali of the child for whom the Sanskar is being conducted. As per the panchang, the months of Chaitra, Karthik, Paush, and Phalgun are best for Karnavedha Muhurat 2020 Auspicious Timings. As for the dates, the most auspicious will be all tithis except for Chaturthi, Navami, Chaturdashi, and Amavasya (fourth, ninth, fourteenth, and New Moon respectively). Similarly, Monday, Wednesday, and Friday are also lucky while the transit of Jupiter in Taurus, Sagittarius, Libra, Pisces is also a good omen. On the flip side, always remember not to calculate the Karnavedha Muhurat 2020 Dates on a day which falls in an eclipse, the Kharmas, any Kshaya Tithi, Chaturmas, Janmamas, or during Bhadra.

When To Do Karnavedha Sanskar?

The Karnavedha Muhurat should occur on the 10th, 12th, or 16th day from the baby’s birth. However, if that is not possible due to some reason, then the Karnavedha Sanskar should be conducted in their 6th, 7th, 8th, 10th, or 12th month after birth.

Karnavedha Sanskar: Rituals & Methods

The Karnavedha is a pious sanskar and should begin with the worship of the Gods and Goddesses. Additionally, some people also pray to their Kul Devi/Devta at this time. The child should face East during the Karnavedha Sanskar, as this auspicious direction fills the baby with positive energy. Now, chant/whisper the following mantra in their ear:

भद्रं कर्णेभिः क्षृणुयाम देवा भद्रं पश्येमाक्षभिर्यजत्राः।
स्थिरैरंगैस्तुष्टुवां सस्तनूभिर्व्यशेमहि देवहितं यदायुः।।

bhadraṃ karṇebhiḥ kṣṛṇuyāma devā bhadraṃ paśyemākṣabhiryajatrāḥ।
sthirairaṃgaistuṣṭuvāṃ sastanūbhirvyaśemahi devahitaṃ yadāyuḥ।।

The piercing of the right ear of the boys and the left of the girls is auspicious. Afterwards, they are made to wear gold earrings.

Precautions

One should ensure several precautions during the Karnavedha Sanskar. To begin with, the instrument that will pierce the baby’s ear should be sterilized. Disinfect it by cleaning it with hot water. Next, remember to put some antiseptic cream on the baby’s ear after the piercing. Admittedly the baby should wear gold earrings afterwards. However, if there is any reason that that is not possible, then ascertain that the jewellery they do wear is nickel-free. Also, the baby should be comfortable wearing it.
