As per the Hindu scriptures, it is believed that it was during the month of Sawan when the Samudra Manthan (Churning of the milk ocean) took place. While churning the ocean by gods and demons, a lot of things came out. One of the most deadliest thing was poison (Halahala). For saving the world from the bad effects of poison, it was swallowed by Lord Shiva, as no one else could do it.

Thus, Lord Shiva acted as the savior of the universe by consuming the poison. Since then, he is also worshiped as Neelkanth. Hence, the month of Sawan is dedicated to Lord Shiva. Thus, worshiping Lord Shiva during the days of Sawan Somvar is given utmost importance.

Now that we know what the real story behind worshiping Lord Shiva is during Savan Somvar Vrat, let’s see what significance is held by the Savan Somvar for the people throughout the country.

Savan Somvar Vrat: Significance

The significance of Sawan Somvar Vrat is as follows:

  1. It is believed that Sawan Somvar Vrat is extremely beneficial for the unmarried girls. It is stated that by observing the Somvar Vrat, they will get married to the person of their choice.
  2. Sawan Somvar Vrat is significant because by observing it, one’s desires are fulfilled and all the dreams come true.

Hence, by observing the Sawan Somvar Vrat and praying to Lord Shiva, a person can achieve his/her desired results. So, this year in the month of Sawan, don’t forget to observe the Sawan Somvar Vrat.

The entire month of Sawan is filled with festivity and joy. It is not just the four Somvars of Savan, but Sawan Somvar are divided into three major types of Vrats:

  1. Sawan Somvar Vrat : It is a fast of Monday, observed only in the month of Savan.
  2. Solah Somvar Vrat : In the month of Savan, a Solah Somvar fast is observed.
  3. Somya Pradosh Vrat : This fast is observed till the evening in the Shravan Maas.

Worshiping Lord Shiva and Goddess Parvati during the time of Sawan Somvar Vrat is considered extremely religious. While observing the Sawan Somvar Vrat, there are certain rituals that need to be followed to gain the blessings of Lord Shiva.

Savan Somvar Vrat: Rituals

The rituals of Shravan Somvar Vrat are as follows.

  1. The devotees take a holy dip in the morning and pray to Lord Ganesha. Post that, they worship Lord Shiva and Goddess Parvati.
  2. Shravan Somvar Vrat is dedicated to Lord Shiva. The offering of Bael leaves (Aegle marmelos), honey, milk, butter, yogurt, and jaggery (Panchabhutas) is performed to the Shiva Linga.
  3. Puja Sthan (place where puja is performed) is cleansed and idol or picture of Lord Shiva is established there.
  4. Mantras like ‘’Om Namah Shivay’’ and ‘’Maha Mrityunjay Mantra’’ are chanted throughout the Sawan Somvar Vrat.
  5. The devotees also wear Rudraksha and use Rudraksh Mala for Japa or meditation.
  6. On the day of Somvar Vrat, recite or listen to Solah Somvar Vrat Katha, otherwise it is believed that the fast is incomplete. The Solah Somvar Vrat Katha depicts the journey of Lord Shiva.
  7. Abstain from having normal food items. Food items that should be consumed in the Sravan Vrat are potato chips, fruits, Sabudana Khichdi (sago hotchpotch), etc.

Mantra to be chanted in the name of Lord Shiva during Sawan Somvar Vrats is given below:

ध्यायेन्नित्यंमहेशं रजतगिरिनिभं चारुचंद्रावतंसं रत्नाकल्पोज्ज्वलांग परशुमृगवराभीतिहस्तं प्रसन्नम्‌।

These are some of the rituals that are performed during the Savan Somvar Vrat. This year also, the same rituals should be observed while following the Sawan Somvar Vrat. During the month of Sawan, the second most important Shivratri also occurs. It is basically the monthly Shivaratri, which occurs in the month of Sawan; hence, known as Sawan Shivaratri.

It is believed that if Sawan Shivratri falls on a Monday, its significance increases immensely. Reason being, the three most auspicious and favorite days of Lord Shiva fall on one day i.e Savan, Savan Somvar, and Masik Shivaratri.

Savan is a month of rains, be it time of rain of festivals. This Sawan in 2016, festivals like Somvati Amavasya, Nag Panchami , Janmashtami , Raksha Bandhan , etc. will be celebrated. It is a season of ‘rain of the blessings of Gods’.
