From the office of Pandit Roopnauth Sharma

Sub: Request for talk on TV

Our Spiritual Leader Pandit Roopnauth Sharma is a prominent personality in Canada with love for Sanatana Dharma and its principles. We are suggesting that Pandit Ji time may be utilized for a talk on your TV/ Radio for discussion on Hinduism.

His religious background is well appreciated by all, especially the youth. He wants to spread Vedic ideology far and wide and he wants that each of us feel proud to be Hindus. At the same time he does not believe in superstitions and untruthful religious practices and discourses. He gives a fitting reply to the invasions on Indian culture, history and social values.

Pandit Roopnauth Sharma, fondly called as Pandit Ji, is one of the most influential and distinguished spiritual and religious leaders on the philosophies of Hinduism. He is a noted preacher and an orator full of strong convictions, and a scholar too who works tirelessly promoting cultural harmony in and around Peel region. He is the founder President of a group of institutions comprising of the Shri Ram Mandir, Canada Hindu Heritage Centre, Kala Niketan School of performing Arts, Bal Vihaar and the Mississauga Hindu School. In addition to the above, Pandit Ji works in conjunction with several organizations here in Canada and is President of most prestigious Hindu Federation (a group of 15 Temples in Ontario, representing 70% of the Hindu population) propagating Hinduism and Indian culture.

Pandit Ji maintains a very demanding schedule consisting of lecturing, consulting, counselling, and religious discourses. His inspired discourses on Hinduism perceive a much-needed message both for the Western Hindu and for the orthodox Eastern Hindu, especially those who have immigrated to the West. The message lays great stress on the traditional Hindu values, on temple worship, on devotion, on the profound depths of the world's most ancient religion and on the state of Hinduism today. Its message is essentially for the friends and members of Hinduism and other communities as it speaks strongly of our Hindu roots, convictions and philosophy. His focus is promoting a healthy life style through spiritual up-liftment founded on humanistic value system based upon Hindu way of life.

It shall be greatly appreciated if you kindly allow us to discuss the matter at a mutually convenient time and date.

    Yours Sincerely

    Kanayalal Raina

    Kashmir Shaivism
    Shiva-Lingam

It was in the month of April 1993 that Pandit Prem Nath Shashtri (Jyotishi) a great Kashmiri Pandit, scholar and philosopher visited us. Initially his visit was planned for a night’s stay but as it happened he remained at our place for over two weeks. His greatest claim to fame, rests on his untiring efforts in publishing cheap editions of ancient religions texts of Kashmiri Pandits and making them available to the common people. For this he would go from place to place in Kashmir, almost door to door, and collect original manuscripts from people who were most loathe to part with them. Perhaps he was the only scholar who did that with a good measure of success. But for him many of these texts would have been lost or remained obscure especially those on Kashmiri Hindu rituals and religious practices. During the years after the forced exodus of Kashmiri Pandits in 1989, Pandit Prem Nath Shastri had become acutely conscious and concerned about the dangers to the cultural identity of Kashmiri Pandits in exile. ‘Our ritual traditions had become as important as they were never before. Not in their negative degenerated form, but in their positive essence. Our traditions will hold us together in exile,” he said to us while thinking aloud on the tragedies that befell upon Kashmiri Pandits. Not surprisingly, he undertook the arduous task of commenting and explaining the main ritual traditions of Kashmiri Pandits. He brought out small booklets, audio, video cassettes and CD’s on the significance and performance of almost all important religious traditions and rituals of Kashmiri Pandits. These capsules like Karam Kand Deepak, Shivratri Puja, Sandiya, Antim Sanskar, Janam Din Puja has had a marked impact on the Kashmiri Pandit Social life in exile.

Very gradually the families of displaced Kashmiri Pandits have become active participants in their religious traditions. The simple and erudite expositions of Shastri Ji both in written and audio forms on such works like Panchastavi, Bhawani Sahsranama, Mahimnapaar, Bhagwat Geeta, and verses of Lal Ded have been a profound attempt to bring the spiritual tradition of Kashmiri Pandits within the reach of the displaced Hindu society from Kashmir. His books, especially Vijyeshwar Panchang’ and cassettes are a must in each and every Kashmiri Pandit home.

While staying with us threadbare discussion, as follows below, on to whom we should pray and on Kashmir Shaivism went on for over two weeks. He was considered an authority on these subjects. He stated that this was a riddle before the Vedic Rishis, filled with mystic thought that would enable them, to know the Supreme Being, being the efficient cause of this universe. It was a very pertinent question, to arrive at the Ritam—the right conclusion for understanding the Satyam –the truth, spoken by the Vedic Rishis. It was a very sensitive investigation for those, who were born in the early phases of the Vedic era. They concluded through their intuitive power that the Divine is formless. Some asserted that the Divinity is with attributes. It is because of this fact, that they appreciated some thing concrete, to form the image of the Divinity. They experienced that there is mutations in Prakriti—the manifested nature. Divine has been assigned the name of Ishvara, in the Vedic tradition. The same Ishvara is the Brahman of the Upanishads, Shakti in the Tantras, and Bhagawan in the Puranas. When we ask the basic question 'who am I', prescribed for those with pure 'heart' (or calm disposition) , this Vichaar (thought process)leads to the realization that 'I am that supreme Brahman', also called by the many other names. Brahman of Vedanta is nothing but the Para-Shiva of Shaivism. It is this supreme substratum acting through the collective mind of all beings (Maya), that we call GOD or Ishwara.
