The birth of a child also leads to responsibilities for the family as well. Right from nurturing the child to carving a good future for them is the duty of the family members. As per Hindu traditions, there are a number of other responsibilities that a family has towards the newborn. One such responsibility is Mundan. Mundan must be done within an auspicious muhurat so as to weave good results in the future.

What is Mundan?

There are total 16 Sanskar in Hinduism. Mundan is the eighth of these 16 Hindu Sanskar. Mundan refers to the removal of hair from a child’s head. Mundan is a popular tradition that is followed by people of different communities and religions. The process is known by various names in different regions and different communities. commonly referred to as tonsuring. It is also known as Chaul Mundan, Chaulkarana, Chudakarana, etc.

Why is Mundan performed?

It is believed that a person is born in the form of human being after 8.4 million births (Yonis). There are some undesirable elements from the past lives that are carried along with the body of a newborn child. Also, the hair formed inside the womb of the mother while the foetus is developing are considered to be impure in nature. Therefore, it is a tradition to remove the hair from the child's head in order to remove the impurities and get rid of bad debts and evil deeds of the past lives. This process is known as Mundan Sanskar.

Importance of Mundan Muhurat

Mundan is an important event in an individual's life. Hence, it should be performed in accordance with the Mundan Muhurat. Mundan muhurat refers to the time-slots that are best suited to perform Mundan Sanskar. It is important that mundan should be carried out according to the muhurat in order to maximize the benefits and minimise the bad omens.

When and where should Mundan ceremony be performed?

Mundan is performed before the child turns 5 years old. Some people believe that the phrase “The sooner, the better”, stands true for performing Mundan Sanskar. Mostly, Mundan is preferred to be carried out in odd ages rather than in even ages. It is performed for boys as well as for girls. However, there are some families that only perform mundan ceremony for boys and not for girls.

The ceremony can be performed at one’s home, in some temple or at some religious place like Haridwar, Vaishno Devi temple, etc. Different families have different traditions about locating and confirming the place where Mundan ceremony is to be performed. Many people prefer to have the Mundan done in their Kul-Devta temple. Some people perform the ceremony at Siddharth Shakti Peeth or other pilgrimage places.

How is Mundan Muhurat calculated?

Mundan Muhurat is calculated with the help of astrological laws. The tool used for determining the Mundan Muhurat is the Panchang, which is the Hindu calendar. The Panchang consists of:

  • Vaar: It is the day of the week on the specific date.
  • Tithi: It is the lunar date which is of immense importance in the Hindu calendar.
  • Nakshatra: These are the 27 constellation, the position of which helps in determining the Muhurat.
  • Yoga: It is a calculation that determines the distance between the Sun and the Moon.
  • Karna: It is the half of the Tithi.

These five elements of the Panchang and the position of celestial bodies determine the appropriate time during which the Mundan ceremony of a child can be done.

It is a general tradition that the position of the Moon is an important aspect to be kept in mind while determining the Muhurat in Shukla Paksha. On the other hand, Mundan Muhurat during Krishna Paksha relies on Tara Chakra. Tara Chakra is an integral part of astrology that helps in making accurate predictions about the future life of a person. It is used to find out the favourable and unfavorable Nakshatra for a person.

However, if the Moon is in conjunction with a beneficial planet, the effect of Tara Chakra can be neglected. Solar and Lunar eclipse should be kept in mind as well.

Calculating Mundan Muhurat is not an easy task. Different astrologers consider different aspects for drawing a conclusion. Erring on the side of caution, people often consult eminent astrologers to know the best time for performing the Mundan ceremony.

Astrological facts to be considered while calculating Mundan Muhurat

  • It is best to perform the Mundan during Uttarayan months, which means the months after Sun Uttarayan are considered to be the best time for performing Mundan.
  • The time from 14 January to 15 July is auspicious for Mundan.
  • There are 27 Nakshatra in total. Among them, the best suited for Mundan are Jyeshtha, Mrigashira, Revati, Chitra, Hasta, Ashwini, Pushya, Swati, Punarvasu, Shravana, Dhanishta and Satabhisha.
  • The position of the Moon is important while determining the Muhurat for Mundan. Therefore, the birth chart of the child should be thoroughly studied and If Moon is situated in 4th, 8th, 12th or in any other house that is not benefic for it, Mundan should not be performed.
  • It is also believe that performing the Mundan during Dwitiya, Tritiya, Chaturth, Shashtam, Saptam, Navam and Dwadash Lagna (sign ascendants) is auspicious.
  • The Dwitiya, Tritiya, Panchami, Sashti, Saptami, Dashmi, Ekadashi and Dwadashi are considered to be auspicious dates for Mundan.
  • The Trayodashi and Purnima of Shukla Paksha are also favourable for Mundan.
  • It is best to perform the Mundan Sanskar on Monday, Wednesday, Thursday and Friday.
  • If someone wants to perform the Mundan Sanskar without a Mundan Muhurat, they can do it in Navratri at Siddha Shakti Peeth.

What are the benefits of performing Mundan Sanskar?

  • It is believed that Mundan or tonsuring eliminates the sins and bad deeds from past lives.
  • It is known to erase the memories from previous births and lets the individual have a fresh beginning in their new life.
  • Mundan is believed to increase strength and intelligence of the child.
  • It also affects longevity in a positive manner.
  • Removal of scalp hair exposes the scalp and thus, the child gets more vitamin D.
  • It also protects the child from evil eye, which can be very harmful for the child.
  • It has a cleansing and purifying effect on the child.
  • Mundan increases the blood flow in the scalp.
  • Mundan also helps in hair growth of the child.
  • It is believed that proper tonsuring increases the volume of hair that grow afterwards.
  • It helps to keep the head of the child cool.
  • It also helps to get rid of scalp sweat and thus reduces the chances of scalp infections.
  • Mundan involves shaving of scalp hair so the chances of head lice are eliminated.
  • Children tend to pull their hair. After mundan, the chances of doing so are nil.
  • The hair formed inside the womb of the mother might carry impurities with them. Mundan ensures the removal of such impurities.
  • Mundan is known to have increased the rate of growth and development in children.
  • Mundan helps to regulate the temperature of the head and brain.
  • Mundan plays an important role during the teething of a child. The headaches caused due to teething are reduced to a large extent.

Process of performing Mundan ceremony

  • Generally, a priest is appointed to conduct the Mundan Sanskar.
  • A Havan is done to ensure that things take place in the best possible way.
  • Lord Ganesha is worshipped before performing the Mundan.
  • Performing Aayush Hom Havana is known to have increased the auspiciousness of the process.
  • The child should be bathed well before the Mundan.
  • The child should sit on the lap of his or her mother.
  • The face of the child must be towards West direction.
  • The child must face towards the sacred fire and should never sit backwards.
  • The process starts with the priest shaving some part of scalp hair.
  • It is important that holy mantras must be recited while executing this task.
  • After initial shaving by the priest, the rest of the hair are generally shaved by a barber that the family appoints.
  • In some families, the process is started by the father of the child instead of the priest. In both the cases, it should be kept in mind that the rituals are properly followed, failing which the Mundan Sanskar would not yield the desired results.
  • After the removal of all the hair from the scalp, the child's head is washed by Ganga Jal. In some traditions, the head with washed with normal water after which Ganga Jal is sprayed on the scalp of the child.
  • It is believed that after exposing the scalp to Gangajal, purification process is completed.
  • A paste of Sandalwood and turmeric is applied evenly on the head of the child. Sandalwood helps in soothing the skin, whereas turmeric possesses anti-inflammatory properties.
  • Cuts and nicks should be carefully dealt with. Antiseptic creams should be applied and proper treatment must be followed.
  • The hair that have been shaved are generally immersed in flowing water. Also, some people offer them to deities.
  • After this, the process of Mundan Sanskar is completed.

Precautions to be taken while performing Mundan Ceremony

  • The Mundan Muhurat should be calculated very carefully and no risks should be taken while doing the calculations.
  • A good astrologer should be consulted for the purpose so that the best time can be determined.
  • All the apparatus used for shaving the child's head must be sterilised. Using new instruments seem to be a better option than using old ones.
  • The child should be properly bathed before conducting the ceremony.
  • There is a debate among astrologers regarding the execution of Mundan process during the first month after the child's birth. Some astrologers find it to be lucky whereas others believe it to be unfavorable. Therefore, you should ask your astrologer about it and get the answer as per your situation.
  • The month of Jyestha should be avoided for performing the Mundan Sanskar of the firstborn child.
