As per the legend, there was a ruler named King Hima. His son was predicted to die after marriage. Soon after the boy got married and his wife heard of the prediction, she decided to save her husband’s life.
So after marriage, his wife did not allow him to sleep and therefore, laid out all her jewelry. Along with this, she made a big heap of all the diamonds, silver and gold that she had, at the doorstep. She also lighted up the whole room with lamps and all through the night she sang songs to make the prince awake.
When Lord Yama arrived in the form of snake to take away Prince’s life, he became blind by the shine of the heap of jewelry and gold. Hence, Yamaraj could not enter the chamber and the life of prince was saved by his wife’s intelligence. Since then, the day is celebrated as Dhanteras and people buy gold and silver jewelry on this day. Along with this, they sing songs and offer prayers to remove all the evil and bad times from their lives.
