In accordance with the Hindu Scriptures, it is extremely essential to avoid the consumption of grains and cereals on the day of Ekadashi. It is believed that on the day of Ekadashi, these two food items are contaminated by sin.Therefore, while observing fast on Ekadashi, be cautious about what to eat.
You can observe Ekadasi fast in either of the 2 ways explained below:
Nirjala Vrat: In this type of fast, you cannot consume anything as long as the fast goes on. Even water cannot be taken in Nirjala Vrat.
Phalahari Vrat: This is a partial fast and you can take milk, fruit, and nuts in Phalahari vrat. According to the Hindu Calendar, Ekadashi fast is observed on every eleventh lunar day. In one month, two Ekadashi fasts are observed. One Ekadasi fast occurs during the Shukla Paksha (bright half) and second one occurs during the Krishna Paksha (dark half).

Pausha Putrada EkadashiPausha Putrada Ekadashi fast is mostly observed by the married women for the well-being of their children. In 2017, this day is on 8 January and 29 December.
Shattila EkadashiShattila Ekadashi in 2017 will take place on 23 January. The term Shattila is derived from the word 'Til' (sesame), which means sesame seeds and therefore, on this day, Til is offered to the needy people. Pleasing Lord Vishnu on this Ekadasi frees from all the sins.
Jaya EkadashiJaya Ekadasi in 2017 will take place on 7 February. Fasting on Jaya Ekadashi not only pleases Lord Vishnu, but also helps in eradicating all sins and mistakes. It is strongly believed that people who observe fast on this day attain salvation (Moksha).
