Origin of word "Hora" & "Horai" in Astrology

Hora entered into English from Spanish route. It is an interesting fact that Hora means "Time" in Spanish too. However, this word has been first introduced by the Maharishi Parashara in his creation "Brihat Parashara Hora Shastra" that means the "scientific study of Astrology". The word "Shastra" means "Science" and combined "Hora Shastra" means "the scientific study of time". Hora is a Sanskrit word, which means the duration from one sunrise to next sunrise. While Horai is a word that is used in Tamil for Hora.

What is Hora?

Hora is a branch of traditional Vedic Astrology named as "Jyotish" in Hindi and Sanskrit. There are 7 different Horas or Horai and total 24 Horas fall in a day. It is basically a one hour duration in a day, ruled by certain planet. Did you ever notice the order of weekdays? Why is it following this chronological order? Like Sunday comes first, then Monday and so on till Saturday. The whole mystery can be understood through "Hora". For that, we need to first understand about the "Hora Chakra". Like a Rahu Kaal and Chaughadia , Hora is also a part of Muhurat.

What is Hora Chakra?

Mostly, we consult with an Astrologer or Pandit in order to find auspicious Muhurat. However, sometimes we fail to consult with an astrologer due to various reasons. Hence "Jyotish Shastra" has introduced the technique named as "Hora Chakra". Now, "Hora Cycle" helps to the person in determining the good Muhurta to start any good task. Horas are seven in number and they use to follow a cyclic pattern during whole day and night. It revolves for 24 hours for a particular time period or hour, that period may be favourable for you to commence any new activity. If we consider the heliocentric system of planets, based on their speeds, we may find the Moon has the highest speed among all these planets. Now, list all these planets based on their speeds and distances from Sun, we get the order as Moon , Mercury, Venus, Earth, Mars , Jupiter and Saturn. However, Moon is a satellite astronomically but we take it as a planet astrologically as it is influencing the planet Earth.

How to Calculate Subha Horai?

Horai can be calculated by the certain time, ruled by certain planet, within a day of a week. The hora day starts from one sunrise and ends on next sunrise. The Hora can be of two types for a day named as:

• Day Horai: it is the hora between sunset to sunrise.
• Night Horai: it is the hora between sunset to sunrise.

The one hour duration in a day is known as Hora, ruled by certain planet. We all know that there are 24 hours in a day, hence Horas are also 24 defined in the Vedic Astrology. The following chart can provide you the information regarding the day and the planet ruling the one hour duration. To understand the Horaphala of any day of a week, you need to first know the local sunrise time at your place on that particular day.

• For example: If it is Monday and you want to check today's Horai at 10:00 AM, you need to confirm your local sunrise time. Let's suppose if it is 6:30 AM, hence first hora will continue till 7:30 AM, second hora will continue till 8:30, and so on. Therefore, the time which you want to check i.e. 10:00 AM falls under 4th hora of that day and is ruled by the planet Mars.

Significance of Seven Hora

• Sun Hora (Surya Hora): Sun Hora is energetic, powerful and vigorous hora. It is good for government undertakings, politics etc.
• Venus Hora (Shukra Hora): Venus Hora is beneficial and recommended for love, romance, marriage, music or all worldly comforts etc.
• Mercury Hora (Budh Hora): Mercury Hora is very quick and unstable. It can be recommended for education purposes or learning purposes.
• Moon Hora (Chandra Hora): Moon Hora is soft and fluctuating. It can be recommended for all good activities.
• Saturn Hora (Shani Hora): Saturn is all about delaying the things. It can be recommended for products related to oil, iron etc.
• Jupiter Hora (Guru Hora): Jupiter is all about blessings, favourable and fruitful. It is recommended for transactions related to finance.
• Mars Hora (Mangal Hora): Mars is aggressive and volatile. It can be recommended for electrical fields like mechanical, engineering etc and sports proposes. It should be avoided for any auspicious work and important work.

Use of Subha Horai

• It is a second divisional chart of Shodashvarga. It affects directly to the houses of an individual's birth chart. An astrologer must see Hora chart while analysing the favorable points.
• The activities commenced during the Hora, ruled by the lord of related house in birth chart, will provide the good results.
• The activities commenced during Badhkesh Hora from concerned house, will provide the bad results.
