The mighty Saturn is the natural significator of our all-important professional career of life. Saturn controls all kind of services and, as such, it is the key planet in the professional life of all service holders. Being the controller of masses, it is the most important planet alike for politicians, social leaders, private employers and contractors along with Moon (the planet for Public Relations). Saturn is also the natural significators of our longevity, chronic ailments, backwardness, poverty, reversal in life, spirituality, etc. Saturn is known as strict disciplinarian, hard taskmaster and conferrer of justice. In Hindu Astrology, Saturn has two states viz. benefic state and malefic state depending on its lordships and placement in a Natal Horoscope. A strong and favourably poised Saturn makes the professional career smooth whereas a weak and unfavorably poised Saturn turns the professional career full of hurdles and painful.
Saturn rules over signs Capricorn and Aquarius. It is exalted in sign Libra and debilitated in sign Aries. Saturn is friendly with Venus and Mercury and it has great respect for Jupiter (the Divine Preceptor). The aspect of a benefic Jupiter on an ill placed Saturn has the capability to tune down the adverse affects of Saturn to a large extent. Jupiter’s aspects are always considered as Divine Blessings.
Saturn is the first rated benefic for Libra and Taurus Ascendants if not ill placed, retrograde as well as not in enemy association or under the influence of enemy planets. The combination of Saturn with Mars/Sun/Rahu is unfavourable, as these combinations have found to make a person aggressive in nature as well as suffering from many reversals in life. Saturn – Rahu combinations have been found to give terminal diseases like Carcinoma, etc especially, when such a combination is found in The placement of Saturn in 1st, 2nd, 4th, 5th, 7th, 9th, 10th & 11th houses from Ascendant is favourable from professional angle with some variations. Similar, placement of Saturn should there be in Navamsha and Dashamsha Charts also. Besides, influencing the houses of its placement, a direct Saturn influences three houses (total being four) and the planets posited therein. Saturn has three aspects (3rd, 7th & 10th) from the house of its placement. In the case of a retrograde Saturn, it influences eight houses in total of a Natal/Transit Horoscope and the planets posited therein, through association and aspects. Saturn becomes retrograde once in a year. The table below shows the benefic and malefic placement/aspects of Saturn with reference to Lagna (Asc).

1. The table above shows that out of the 12 houses in a Natal Horoscope, the placement of Saturn is favourable in 7 houses taking into consideration the placement and houses aspects by Saturn from its natal position. Kendra/Trikone/2nd/11th house placement and aspects of planets are considered favourable so is the case with Saturn.
2. When Saturn is placed in other 4 houses, it gives mixed result.
3. Only when Saturn is placed in 6th house from Lagna, it is unfavourable because of its influence on Trika houses (3, 6, 8 & 12) only.
4. Some Astrologers believe that Saturn’s placement in 5th house from Lagna or Moon is bad from professional angle since 5th house is 8th house (most evil Trika house) from the 10th house of Karma (profession). I do not believe in this dictum because Saturn itself is the natural significator of profession and the professional career should also be assessed from the house of placement of Saturn in a Natal Horoscope taking the same as Lagna. Except in case of Aries and Taurus Ascendants, where Saturn itself is the Karmadipathi (lord of professional career), the placement of Saturn in 5th house (i.e. in Leo & Virgo, respectively) could be not favourable.
5. The above observations would hold goods only in case of unoccupied houses aspected by an unassociated Saturn.
1. Saturn in transit always brings changes to the significations of unoccupied houses transited and aspected.
2. Saturn in transit over any planet(s) brings changes to significations of the lordships represented by such planet(s) in a horoscope.
3. Saturn being the natural significator of professional matter, its transit always has a telling effect either positive or negative (mostly positive) on the professional career.
4. For example, Saturn’s transit over 3rd House/Lord gives the chances of frequent movement or short distance travel during such transit. On 9th house/lord, it gives chances of long distance travel including tour abroad. All these are subject to natal planetary promises including running of supportive Dasha, Antar Dasha and PD atleast according to two Dasha systems including conditional one, if applicable.
5. Saturn is a strict disciplinarian and a conferrer of justice. As such, it naturally deserves the people should also act accordingly to obtain his blessings.
6. Saturn when occupying a benefic house and in friendly conjunction which includes Jupiter deliver benefic result. Saturn – Jupiter conjunction in 2nd, 4th, 7th, 10th & 11th houses has the potential to produce barrister or lawyer of name and fame.
