Basant Panchami or Saraswati Puja is celebrated on the fifth lunar day of the bright fortnight of the Hindu month Magha. Let’s now understand the significance of Saraswati Puja or Basant Panchami in 2016.
Basant Panchami is believed to be the birthday of Saraswati, who is the Goddess of education & knowledge. Spring is considered as the season of new beginning. Commencing education on the day of Saraswati Puja is considered to be very auspicious. On the occasion of Basant Panchami, schools and educational institutions perform Puja to please Goddess Saraswati.
Maa Saraswati is the Goddess of education, knowledge, and arts. As Basant Panchami is the birthday of Goddess Saraswati, so people worship her on this day. It is said that if you worship Goddess Saraswati on this day, she will bless you with knowledge. This day is also known as Abujh Muhurat. During this Muhurat, Goddess Saraswati is worshiped in all the temples, schools, and educational institutions. All the books and stationery are kept on the feet of Goddess Saraswati and are worshiped the same way. Goddess Saraswati is also known as the Goddess of music & art. She is worshipped before the beginning of any cultural activity or music.
According to Indian mythology, Maa Saraswati wears white color, which signifies purity. She is portrayed with four hands. She holds Veena in two hands, a white lotus in other hand and in the fourth hand, she carries the scriptures. Goddess Saraswati is also known as the mother of Sanskrit. Scriptures in her hand demonstrates immense knowledge and learning. It is believed that if a person worships Goddess Saraswati, he/she becomes the owner of great knowledge and wisdom.
According to Hindu mythology, Lord Brahma created earth and humans. However, he got disappointed when he noticed silence all around. It was then, he created Goddess Saraswati by sprinkling some water in the air. As Goddess Saraswati came from water, that’s why she is also called as water deity. Goddess Saraswati was born with Veena in her hand. She filled the world with beautiful music and blessed the world with voice.
There is another legend associated with Saraswati Puja. It says that once, ‘Kalidasa’, the famous poet went to commit suicide in Saraswati river, as he was called foolish by his wife. While he was about to jump in the river, Goddess Saraswati emerged from water. She asked him to take a dip in the water. Kalidasa did the same and after that very moment he became erudite. He became a famous poet. Thus, Goddess Saraswati is worshiped for bestowing with knowledge and learning.
People wear yellow clothes and eat yellow colored sweets on the day of Basant Panchami, as yellow the spring season. It is the color of Sun, which gives energy and mustard fields bloom with yellow flowers. This color is also associated with the light of knowledge.
The festival of Basant Panchami has its social, religious, and seasonal significance. People celebrate this festival with great joy and enthusiasm. In the morning, Goddess Saraswati is worshiped in temples, schools and other educational institutions. Children fly kites to welcome the spring.
Some people feed Brahmans to pacify their ancestors. According to Hindu mythology, if you feed a Brahman on Basant Panchami, your ancestors directly accept the food. This custom is known as ‘Pitri-Tarpan’. Some people also worship Kamdev (God of Love) on this day.
The northern states of India like, Haryana, Bihar, Punjab and Uttar Pradesh celebrate this festival as the ‘festival of kites’. Whereas,people of West Bengal celebrate it by setting up Pandals to welcome Goddess Saraswati. Here, this festival is known as Sri Panchami.
