Gudhi Padwa, also known as Gudi Padwa, is one of the most important festivals in Maharashtra, Madhya Pradesh, Goa and Karnataka. Though, it is celebrated all across India. The day of Gudi Padwa marks the starting of New Year according to Marathi Hindu calendar. Gudi Padwa is the first day i.e. Chaitra 1 (Pratipada) and Chaitra is the first month of Marathi calendar.
Gudhi Padwa Celebrations
The festival of Gudi Padwa marks the beginning of spring season. On this occasion, people start their day by tasting leaves of Indian Lilac (Neem). In small towns and villages, houses are swept clean and plastered with fresh cow-dung. Traditionally, women draw various Rangoli designs in different parts of home with vibrant colors. In Maharashtra, people make delicious dishes like Shrikhand and Poori to celebrate this festival.
Gudi Padwa: The Myth
As per the Brahma Purana, Lord Brahma started to create world after Pralaya on the day of Gudi Padwa and time started to move forward. Gudi Padwa is considered to be among those one of the three and a half days in the Hindu calendar, which is also known as "Sade Teen Muhurt", whose every moment is considered auspicious to begin new activities.
Legend Behind Gudi Padwa
On this day of Gudi Padwa, people hoist victory flags called Gudi in front of their homes. It is raised in front of main entrance of the house on the right side. It is believed to be the symbol of victory of Shalivahan over Shakas. However, later it also associated with victory of Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj. According to the legends, Gudi prevents family members from various evil effects and bestow them with good luck, prosperity and success. Some also call Gudi as Indradhvaj or Brahmadhvaj.
